In all areas of life, ancient CHamoru women were never behind men and took the lead. Women had an equal say in all decisions made in ancient CHamoru society. Women owned and were the primary caretakers of their children and clan’s land and resources. Women controlled their family’s finances and wealth. Women fished within the reef and cooked for their families. Women worked side-by-side with men to clear the land, plant, cultivate and harvest crops. Women courageously carried on the legacy of what it means to be CHamoru despite more than 350 years of colonization and war from patriarchal powers. Again, a woman created the universe out of her brother’s body and all life out of her own. Biba Famalåo’an!
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Soroptimist International of the Marianas, an organization working to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.
